Jungle Trekking “A. Yersin Journey”

Outdoor Traveling is a kind of tourism which helps the tourists gets closer to the world around us. It is the good way for tourists to higher their environmental awareness, feel the beauty of nature and practicing their body by physical activities such as trekking, mountain climbing, swimming… It is also a change for team activities to build team spirit.

Vietnam is the paradise to hold outdoor activities with sunlight all year round, the mysterious tropical forest, bays with many inshore islands, and villages with friendly and hospitable people… In our country, there are some outdoor activities which are loved by foreign tourists such as trekking, bicycling, kayaking, and diving.

“A. Yersin Journey 1891” is jungle trekking which is familiar with foreign tourists. It is new not only because this is the first time Vietmark Co. have developed this tour rout but also because it aims to the local tourists, those who are accustomed to sightseeing more than exercising tour.

In a tour of four days, tourists will trek through the forest in 2 days. This is the good chance for them to feel the beauty of wild nature with a lot of trees, murmuring springs, and steep cliffs…Many skills of observing nature will be guided such as the change of forest ecosystem based on altitude from deciduous thin forest to needle leaf forest. Tourists also have the chance to learn many kinds of stone and geomorphology process along the route. The trip also helps tourists practice Boy Scout’s skills such as pitching a tent, determining direction, finding water sources.

It is not by accidence that the route from Bac Binh to Di Linh is suggested. This is the first exploring trip of Doctor A. Yersin in Dong Duong in 1891. Two years later, 1893, he discovered Langbian Plateau where Dalat City was built. The trip passed many places as Kalon, Tala, Tali… which were written in his diary more than 100 years ago. Everything seems to be the same, still hospitable K’ho and Cham. Their ancestors guided A.Yersin, now they are helping tourist pave the way to ford springs and cross forests.

Let’s join and explore yourself. The trip is difficult with the slopes which are so long that we may think it is impossible overcome, the endless long zigzag path in the forest, and streams with bumpy rocks which seem to dash anyone…but with will and determination, your legs can overcome everything.

Ask and answer:

1. When I trek continuously, what feeling or symptom tell me that I should stop and take a break?
2. What chronic diseases which make the patients unable to join this trekking jungle?
3. How to prevent malaria when trekking, living and sleeping in the forest?

Tourists take medicine to prevent malaria before taking part in the trip. In the forest, mosquito-repellent will be delivered to spray on the skin. Tourists will spend the night in a place where has a fire. The smoke of the fire can dismiss the mosquitoes. They will spend the night in anti-mosquito net tents.

4. Water when trekking in the forest?
Tourists will be delivered a 1.5 liters bottle of water. They drink it in half of the first morning when trekking in the forest. The following drinking water will be the water of the spring. It is sterilized by water filter medicine. The spring water is taken from the cliff, no inhabitants. The purity of the water can be guaranteed.

5. The effect of the water filter medicine?

6. How to know the route in the forest?

Tourists are guided by local ethnic people ( K’ho, Cham or Raglai). They are familiar with forest route because the forest has a strong attachment with their life where they have used dried branch to make firewood (they don’t exploit the living trees because it is a forbidden forest)

7. Can we get lost in the forest?
No, because the forest route is familiar with guided people. There are at least two guided people to serve the group: taking the lead and being at the end. On the way, if someone has to stop because of private thing, the person at the end of the group will wait for you.

8. The forest is so bushy, is it difficult to go?
Jungle is not very bushy as you think. High grass which blocks the path cannot grow because of lacking sunlight. However, tourists can see some thorny and high grass in some places at the forest’s edge…the tour guide will use the bush hook to hack the path.

9. What is the best season to hold this tour?
The best time is from December to February because this time is in the dry season: no rain, no terrestrial leech, reducing moisture, not very dry and hot. However, this is a cold season; we need to keep our body warm at mid night to early in the morning as the temperature reduces quickly.

10. How to keep the body warm when spending the night in a tent?

Tourist must have coat to wear at night. Lying place should be prepared with a silver paper layer. Before pitching a tent, the ground should have a leave layer. Lying under the canopy of the forest, a fire to spread the heat, the smoke from the fire flies to make green house effect which can keep the heat and help the environmental warmer.

11. How do the meals prepared in the forest?
Rice, canned food, vegetables are brought. Tour guide and servers will cook in the forest. Tourists are served hot food in breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because doing many physical activities, so they need much energy.

12 .How to choose a place to have a rest in the forest?
That place must near water source to serve for cooking and bathing. But it should not be too close to the water edge because it is wet and the water can rise suddenly especially dangerous at night. The place of the night must be flat; the ground is not slopping and bumpy so that it is easy to stretch tents. There should be the shadow of the trees above to keep the heat, but the shadow must be high and not be too bushy.

13 .Is it necessary to bring slipper?

Wearing shoes all day, pass the forest, wade across the spring so the shoes are wet that make us uncomfortable. We should have slipper to wear when bath and walk at night. The shoes should be dried by the fire. Tourists will have dry shoes next morning.

14. How to go uphill?
The slopes in this journey are not very high. You should walk with regular steps, keep the breath in harmony, and find a walking stick of forest tree so the hands help the legs. The steps must be firm. Be careful on slippery slope or tottering stones. Use the walking stick or get the help of the team to avoid slipping and falling.

15. How to walk downhill?
Although walking downhill less tired but dangerous because you don’t control the speed, can slip and fall, stumble and fall or roll down.
You should go on zigzag way, use hands to hang on the trees on the way to reduce the speed.

Ideas of Customers
Mr. Le Xuan Thi – the owner of a restaurant.

“The trip is really interesting because I can do physical activities all over; the wet is pouring as bathing. The residue of beer and wine which were stagnated in blood seem to get out of my body! No cell wave, I put all my business aside, my mind seemed to be more comfortable. Since the second day of the trip, I had a problem due to trekking too much, my thighs were rubbing and that made me feel pain. Luckily, I had baby’s talcum powder with me and big short. Finally, I reach the finish safely. After walking 2 days, I lost some kilograms, the blood circulates smoothly, I have the feeling of more lighting and confidence.”

Ms. Nguyen Thùy Trà My - Officer.
“I have to work in the office all day. I feel very free when wandering in the forest in two days as the bird rushes into the sky. The air is pure and fragrant with the smell of leaves.
Wild flower and morning dew make the chest spreading. The cool and fresh spring smooth the skin, get all the tiredness away. The terrestrial leech is now out of season but in fact there are still have some. Fortunately, they did not bite me because I applied the anti- terrestrial leech carefully to the foot and shoes. I am not familiar with walking much; I ride horse when my legs feel pain. The horse is very intelligent, it know the way and avoid obstacles. But it does not know I am sitting on its back.”

Mr. Tran Duy Hai – teacher
Tourism of discovery and adventure is my liking. It is like an attraction which cannot be resisted even when I was a child. I used to take a pack backing tour to experience the interesting things of this kind of tour, Ho Chi Minh trail, the arc of North West, White Horse winning… and the tour through Dong Duong. But when I faced with “Yersin mark”- The tour of Vietmark Co., I feel really happy. I was really interested in the challenges which seemed to be impossible to overcome hardship and the crying happy moment when I conquered and won my own pinnacle.
In short: the interesting feeling of adventure, exploring the primary and beautiful scenery can only be found in this kind of tour, not elsewhere.
