Hoang Lien Son Young Mountain

On surveying Fansipan with managers and chiefs of travel agencies last early April, Mr. Truong Hoang Phuong – Vietmark’s marketing manager and a master of geography – gave a lecture in the jungle about suppositions of Hoang Lien Son’s geological tectonics.

There are many suppositions brought out, however the most reasonable one is the theory of mass tectonics. According to this theory, about 230 million years ago, the Earth was merely a mass of continent, after that it was broken to 2 masses – North and South – those were Laurasia and Gondwana. Laurasia was continuously broken to masses including North America, Eurasia, while Gondwana became masses including Africa, South America, South Pole, Oceania, and especially India. This mass kept drifting toward the North and dashing Eurasia, and this event formed ranges of young mountains like Himalaya and Hoang Lien Son about 60 million years ago, at the time dinosaur started being extinct.

In this period, lava formed masses of magma acid which would make up granite when hardening. Today, India mass still moves slowly and keeps pushing Hoang Lien range up. Mainly because of those factors, Hoang Lien Son becomes the youngest, greatest mountain and the youngest masses of granite in Vietnam. The length of this range is about 200km and many peaks are over 3000m high. It is divided into two parts: Fansipan and Pu Luong - Sa Phin Mountain. The rate of depth difference is great, for example, Fansipan is 3.143m high but not far from there Muong Hoa valley is only about 1200m high or Ban Ho is only about 800m above sea level.

Hoang Lien Son has two dissymmetrical sides – East and West side. In West side, sloping down Da River, is abrupts with full of obstacles and difficult of access. While East side slopes gently and gradually down to Hong River, where there are many streams making up natural galleries to penetrate into Hoang Lien Range and conquer Fansipan Peak.
