115 years ago, from Kalon Village at the foot of Nam Truong Son mountain (Phan Son ward, Bac Binh District Binh Thuan Province), Doctor Alexandre Yersin crossed the forest to carry out the first exploring and find out Di Linh plateau. And today, we young people set off to follow Yersin’s trace.
 

K’ho and Raglai in Phan Son now nearly don’t know the story that 115 years ago, Yersin went to the village to make the geographic discovery of finding out Di Linh Plateau. The old path does not exist now, forest trees block the way. The trip is designed by Vietmark Co. name “A. Yersin Journey”.

Early in the morning, the team was ready to set off with 14 people (9 from Ho Chi Minh City, two officers of Bac Binh District and three local people). The team was divided in to three groups.  Rice, necessities for two days of jungle trekking are also divided into small parts and kept in personal pack backings. Head of the team, geographical master, Mr. Truong Hoang Phuong - the one who used to join the discover trip 10 years ago - spreaded the map rated 1/50.000 and circled every points that the team would pass. He also used the location machine to show the altitude at Phan Son is 1000. In the old days, Doctor Myerson was ridding a horse together with two local people to guide the route, we are today walking on foots. To the end of the village, we met the first challenge – the Mot River. Seeing the urban people took the shoes and shocks off to cross the river, local people smiled: “You will have to cross much”. Finish crossing the river, in front of us was the high rocky ascent with a chain of imposing mountains. Climbing in 10 minutes, the first group got the information that a member was so tired that he had to give up. Frankly, the trip was miserable hard.
K’ Dao, Nui and Tinh- three guiding guys are from 3 different ethnic. They brought the team trekking forest skills. As we arrive the place to take a break at noon, there were a cooking fire which was ready. After washing the rice, the fire was ready to cook. The forest leaves were picked to be vegetables in noodle.

“Yersin” come back!

The sound of the river Giap was louder and louder, that made the spirit more cheerful because we chose that place to be the place of spending the night.  When the team was pitching the tents, there was a sound like the horse of the Doctor Yersin.

Then there was a shadow appeared. Oh, deer! That is Hai- the one who withdraw at the very high slope in the morning. He said: “when I was alone coming back to the village, I felt so regret about this interesting trip. Accidentally, a person went to the forest with a baggage horse, I catch this golden chance and pleaded him to ride the horse to catch the team. The team gathered, the night in the forest was so warm, every people kept their own feeling when thinking the discovery trip one hundred ears ago of Yesin.

Yersin had the habit of writing to hid mom everyday. He told his mother every thing which was happening. Thank to those letters, his life is known lively and in details. The first discovery trip in which he found the Di Linh Plateau is also kept in those letters. 9 pm, after a tired day of climbing mountain and crossing springs but no one can fall asleep. Under the light of the flashlight, we took advantage of writing letters, the trip diary with the experienced feelings.

In the dawn, the team laughed when knowing that the baggage horse escaped. Maybe, he heard that all of us would ride a little the next day and would load the luggage on his back…

When going down the Braian Mountain, it is dark; we met the head of the protective forest station belonging to Bao Thuan afforestation yards, Di Linh District. Bang- worker of the station welcomed us by a touching saying: “stay here one more night. The station will offer all of you the dinner. It has been along time people come here”. The affection of people today is also deep as one hundred year ago when Di Linh Villagers helped Doctor Yersin find the Di Linh Plateau.

Doctor Alexandre Yersin was born on 22 September, 1863 in Switzerland. Since 1886, he worked at Pasteur Institutes and cooperated with Doctor Roux in finding the diphtheria toxin.
In 1895, Yersin established Pasteur Institutes in Nha Trang and make up   Serum which cures the bubonic plague.

Yersin is also known as an explorer. In hid first discovery trip in July, 1891, he found out Di Linh Plateau and later he found Lang Bian Plateau (1893). Yersin’s life was close to Vietnam, Vietnamese call him friendly by “Ong Nam”. He died on 1 March, 1943 and rested in peace at Dau Spring, Nha Trang.
